No more fakes – Verified accounts on the way

Fake accounts on Twitter could soon be a thing of the past as the company recently updated their blog with details on plans to add verification options to the site. The proposed changes, formally known as ‘Verified Accounts’, will be tested under beta this summer, and will aim to protect those most prone to impersonation, for example politicians, famous individuals and so on.

Solid details on how this verification process will work was not made clear, but accounts that are verified by Twitter will display a special badge to quickly confirm to users the legitimacy of an account. This news comes after Tony La Russa, an American baseball manager threatened to sue due to an individual impersonating him on the site. According to reports this case has now been settled outside of court, but this action by Twitter is clearly a response to the problems ‘fake’ accounts can bring.
